A dry (no-screed) underfloor heating system turns a multi-week wet screed job into a same-week install. Panels with embossed aluminium or Omega grooves hold the pipe or cable, spread heat evenly and add almost no build height. Here is the full installation sequence.

- Design the loops Position the manifold and draw loops with 100-150 mm spacing, avoiding fixed furniture and keeping an expansion gap.
- Prepare the subfloor Clean, dry and level the base; lay panels tightly with staggered joints and no heat bridges.
- Lay grooved panels Align groove direction to the plan; use aluminium-faced boards for hydronic, graphene for electric.
- Route pipe or cable Press hydronic pipe or embed the heating cable into the Omega grooves without crossing.
- Test the system Pressure-test hydronic loops and megger-test the electric cable before any covering.
- Cover and tile Spread flexible adhesive with reinforcing mesh, set tiles, keeping build height to 20-30 mm.
- Commission Fit thermostat and sensor, then bring the system up gradually on first run.
Frequently asked questions
Can dry UFH go under any floor finish?
It performs best under tile or stone, which conduct heat well. For wood or vinyl, use panels and adhesives rated for that finish and respect the floor's temperature limit.
How much build height does it add?
Typically 20-30 mm of panel plus a thin adhesive layer - far less than a 50-70 mm screed, which is why it suits renovations.
Hydronic or electric?
Hydronic is economical for whole-house or large areas; electric suits a single room or top-up where running cost matters less than simplicity.
Do I need insulation under the panels?
The panels include an XPS insulation layer. On an already-insulated slab it is often optional; on a cold concrete base it is the point of the system.
Can I install over existing tiles?
Yes, provided the existing tile is sound, level and well bonded. Check the combined height against doors and thresholds first.
