In a wet-room build the backer board is the layer that decides whether the whole assembly lasts. Get the fixing and waterproofing right and the tiles, grout and membrane all stay put; skip the details and failures surface within a season. This guide covers a correct XPS/cement backer-board installation from bare studs to a tile-ready wall.

- Plan and dry-fit Mark board positions on the studs, plan penetrations, and dry-fit sheets so joints land on supports.
- Cut to size Score-and-snap for straight cuts; use a holesaw or jigsaw for valve and outlet openings.
- Fix to the wall Screw on the printed grid every 200-300 mm with washer-disc fixings, leaving a 2-3 mm gap between sheets.
- Seal the joints Fill gaps with flexible sealant, embed alkali-resistant tape and coat with liquid membrane lapping 50 mm.
- Integrate niche and tray Set pre-formed niche and tray flush, sealing perimeters into the continuous wall membrane.
- Prime and tile Prime the cement face if required, then fix tiles with a flexible S1 adhesive using the correct notch.
- Grout after cure Allow the adhesive to fully cure before grouting and sealing movement joints.
Frequently asked questions
Can tile backer board be used on floors?
Yes. Use 12.5 mm or thicker and screw it to the subfloor on the same grid. For floors with heating, use an XPS underfloor-heating backer board so insulation and pipe-fixing come in one layer.
Do I still need to waterproof if the board is waterproof?
Yes. The board face is waterproof, but the joints, corners and penetrations are not. Building codes for wet rooms require a continuous membrane across all seams - this is the step that prevents leaks.
What screws should I use?
Only the manufacturer's corrosion-resistant washer-disc screws, driven on the printed fixing grid. Never drywall screws, which corrode in damp conditions.
Do I need to prime before tiling?
Often yes on the cement face - follow your adhesive maker's guidance. Priming improves bond on a slightly porous surface.
What thickness for shower walls?
10 mm is standard for stud walls; specify 12.5 mm where you need extra rigidity or are setting large-format tile.
