XPS extruded polystyrene is a closed-cell rigid foam that shrugs off moisture - which is exactly why it is the default board for floors, roofs and below-grade walls. The trick is matching the compressive grade to the load and detailing the edges. Here is the practical install guide.

- Select the grade Match compressive strength to the load: 150-300 kPa roofs/cavities, 300-500 kPa floors, up to 1200 kPa heavy duty.
- Prepare the base Clean, level and place the vapour control layer where the build-up requires it.
- Lay the boards Butt sheets tightly, stagger joints, and tape or overlap seams for continuity.
- Detail edges and penetrations Protect board edges from crushing and keep insulation/waterproofing continuous at every opening.
- Cover and protect Ballast, screed or pave over as the system demands; shield from prolonged UV during storage.
- Use custom-machined parts Order grooved or profiled XPS elements to drawing for trays, heating boards and finished components.
Frequently asked questions
XPS or EPS?
XPS has higher compressive strength and far lower water absorption than EPS, so it holds performance in wet, loaded positions. EPS is cheaper for light, dry applications.
Can XPS be left exposed?
Not as a finished surface. Protect it from UV and mechanical damage; it is a substrate, not a wearing layer.
Which grade for a driveway?
Use 300-700 kPa for residential driveways and 500-1200 kPa for heavier or commercial loads.
Does XPS need a vapour barrier?
Often yes below a slab or where the build-up calls for it - follow the system design rather than assuming.
What lead time for custom shapes?
CNC routing and grooving to drawing is a conversion service; confirm lead time and MOQ with the supplier when you send the drawing.
