How to Audit a China Factory

A low unit price is worthless if the shipment varies batch to batch or the certificate is a photocopy. Auditing a Chinese building-materials factory before you commit protects every order after it. You do not need to be there in person — a structured check uncovers most risks remotely.

Start with the paper, not the tour

Request the documents before any visit. For building materials the non-negotiables are:

Walk the production (or watch the video call)

  1. Raw material control. Where does the XPS bead / masterbatch come from? Batch-traced input means batch-consistent output.
  2. Process steps. Extrusion, lamination, cutting, QC — each should have a defined check, not a glance.
  3. In-process testing. Density, thickness, compression samples taken per run, not per year.
  4. Finishing and packing. Edge protection and labelling done to your spec, not "whatever is handy."

Capacity and lead time reality

QuestionWhat a good answer looks like
Monthly output?Stated in m² or tonnes, with headroom for your volume
Peak-season load?Honest about pre-holiday queues (Chinese New Year!)
Single vs dual line?Dual lines = less single-point risk
Sample lead time?Days for samples, weeks for mass — and they match

A practical audit checklist

Red flags: refuses samples, vague on raw-material source, certificates that "apply to the category" rather than the product, or pressure to skip QC to hit a date. Walk away.

Turning the audit into a contract

Frequently asked questions

Can I audit without flying there?

Yes. Request documents, a live video-call walk of the line, batch records and references; a third-party inspection firm can visit on your behalf.

Which certificates matter most?

ISO 9001 for the system, CE and recognised third-party test reports for the product's fire, water and strength claims.

What is the biggest red flag?

Refusing samples or vague raw-material sourcing — both point to inconsistent output you cannot verify.

How do I lock quality into the order?

Approve a benchmark sample in writing, set AQL and test methods, and require pre-shipment inspection.

Why plan around Chinese New Year?

Factories shut for weeks; pre-holiday queues stretch lead times, so book early or expect delays.
