The product is only half the job — getting it to your warehouse uncrushed and on time is the other half. XPS boards, panels and studs are light but bulky, and that changes every logistics decision. Here is how experienced importers move building materials without surprises.
FCL vs LCL: pick by volume, not habit
| Mode | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FCL (full container) | You fill 15+ CBM or want control | Lower unit cost, one sealed load |
| LCL (shared) | Smaller first order, testing market | Pays per CBM, longer handling |
Light, bulky foam means you often hit container volume before weight. A 20 ft box holds ~28–33 CBM; a 40 ft high-cube ~68–76 CBM. If you are volume-limited, a 40 HC usually beats two 20s.
Palletizing foam boards and panels
- Stack flat, edge-protected. XPS boards stack cleanly; wrap the pack and add corner board so straps do not bite.
- Keep packs square. A lean on a long panel becomes a broken corner after ocean movement.
- Maximum sane pack height ~1.0–1.2 m so a forklift handles it and the stack stays stable.
- Shrink-wrap + strap each pack; the wrap keeps moisture and dust out, the strap holds the cube.
Container loading that survives the voyage
- Pre-inspect the box — dry, no odour, floor sound. A damp container ruins foam.
- Block and brace so loads cannot shift; a moving cube damages itself.
- Distribute weight toward the centre; never a heavy end and a light end.
- Paper the walls in humid lanes to cut condensation on the cargo.
Protecting the product
- Boards are light but the corners are the weak point — corner board and edge caps pay for themselves.
- Keep cartons off the container floor slightly, or use a moisture barrier, in wet-season lanes.
- Label every pack with SKU and quantity so receiving is a count, not a guess.
Cost levers buyers miss
- Consolidate SKUs into one FCL instead of several LCLs to cut handling fees.
- Plan for lead time — ocean plus customs plus drayage is weeks, not days.
- Confirm dimensions with your supplier so the load plan matches the booking.
Frequently asked questions
FCL or LCL for a first order?
LCL for a market test under ~15 CBM; FCL the moment you can fill a box, since volume-limited foam makes 40 HC containers efficient.
How should XPS boards be palletized?
Flat-stacked, edge-protected, shrink-wrapped and strapped in ~1–1.2 m packs so they stay square and fork-liftable.
Will foam survive ocean humidity?
Yes if the container is dry and papered in humid lanes; keep cartons off a damp floor with a moisture barrier.
Which incoterm protects the buyer most?
CIF or CFR puts carriage and insurance to your port on the seller; EXW leaves all risk with you from the factory. See our incoterms guide.
How much fits in a container?
A 20 ft holds roughly 28–33 CBM, a 40 ft high-cube about 68–76 CBM — usually volume-limited, not weight-limited, for foam.
